3.5 Students Know What is Required

Assessments are used to re-focus student learning on targets to enable them to meet/exceed standards.

We set students up for success when we make sure they know and understand what it means to succeed and help them believe they can do so…We set them up for success when we show them the target, provide practice in shooting at it, and provide an assessment forum for them to see themselves demonstrating increasingly higher levels of proficiency.

Richard J. Stiggins,
Student-Centered Classroom Assessment

Suggested Evidence
  • Sample rubrics
  • Classroom observation
Level of Performance: Exceeds Standards
  • Models of actual student performance (exemplars) are used to clarify the task and to distinguish levels of performance. Strategies for improving performance are identified.
  • Rubrics/scoring guides are developed by teachers and students collaboratively prior to the assignment or assessment and are posted or provided to families and stakeholders.
  • The teacher engages students in a variety of self-assessment activities to identify areas for improvement and modify their performance.
  • Students receive timely, meaningful feedback on their performances and use the feedback to strengthen their next performance.
