4.3 Proactive School Discipline Procedures

There is policy, leadership, and staff support for an equitable code of discipline that supports students' understanding of rules, laws and expectations for responsible behavior that enables teaching and learning.

If the school climate is poor (low morale, little focus, poor communication, low regard for the principal) or organizational support is lacking, it may be advisable to address infrastructure problems in the school as a whole before launching a program…[V]aluable practices—such as intervention with the families of students, use of the full range of sanctions and rewards for student behavior, and promoting youth roles in the regulation of student behavior— can lead to improvements in school-wide discipline.
