RTI Process Steps: A Small Elementary School's Approach to Implementation

This interactive presentation will focus on the five essential components for effective Response to Intervention (RTI) implementation. Silvia DeRuvo, Senior Program Associate with the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd, will provide a brief overview of these essential RTI components and the practical school implementation steps necessary for schools to effectively implement a successful RTI model. Brad Barcus, Principal of Sierra Elementary School, a 2007-2008 Title I Academic Achievement Award school, will provide the practical application of these steps as he describes the process that his small rural elementary school took in implementing an effective multi-tiered intervention model. Barcus will focus on the data that has driven the research-based instruction that has helped his school to achieve a score of 852 on the Academic Performance Index (API.) He will also share how his school effectively utilizes its resources to provide interventions for all students found to be “at risk.” Practitioners working with or in elementary schools will benefit from Sierra Elementary School’s “lessons learned” about the RTI process.

Description

Response to Intervention Theme — Spring 2008
Response to Intervention is a promising practice, but many are asking, “How do we get there?” Although the “RTI Triangle” is now a familiar concept, many schools and districts are still looking for the practical process steps necessary to implement successful models. During the months of March through June, SchoolsMovingUp will highlight the models, resources and “lessons learned” from states and schools that have been at the forefront in implementation through a series of webinars. These webinars will highlight specific implementation practices and will provide essential resources to schools and districts as they move forward with their scale-up efforts.
