Presenters

Karen Williams (Primary)
Principal
Signal Hill Elementary School
Description
Principal Karen Williams will share how Signal Hill Elementary School in Los Angeles County, California, which serves a high poverty, high minority student population, performs well above its peers and has received a "similar schools ranking" of 10 (on a 10-point scale) on the California Academic Performance Index (API) for the past two years. At Signal Hill, 18% of the students are African American, 27% are Asian, 46% are Latino, and 89% are eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch. All of these groups are meeting or exceeding Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals in both English language arts and mathematics. In this webinar, Williams will emphasize how setting "SMARTER" goals at the school, classroom, and student levels has empowered teachers and students and helped the school achieve these results.
This webinar is presented by the American Institutes for Research and WestEd as partners in the California Comprehensive Center to highlight high performing schools making a difference in student achievement. To learn more about Signal Hill, please read the school profile.
