Preparing Students for College: An Online Approach to Filling the Gaps in California High Schools
Presenters

Moises Torres (Primary)
Director
University of California College Prep Online at UC Santa Cruz
Description
This interactive presentation with Moises Torres, Director of the University of California College Prep Online at UC Santa Cruz (UCCP), will provide an overview of that program. The goal of the program is to offer online Advanced Placement (AP) courses to students attending high schools that offered few or no AP courses. UCCP also provides students access to SAT/ACT test preparation online and career assessments at no cost. This event will highlight the key elements of the program, especially the collaboration it is establishing with schools, districts, and county offices of education. Additionally, the event will address the development of these online courses and the technology utilized.
UCCP has served over 23,000 students in 225 California schools in its online courses. These online courses do not replace classes in an existing high school curriculum; rather, the program provides students who have limited choices with access to additional courses that will help them become more competitive in college admissions processes. The program also offers access to its UC Gateways system, which is a student information and academic portfolio system offering college preparation tools for middle and high school students, teachers, and counselors.
