Description

In this fourth webinar in our 2010-2011 series on English learners, Jana Echevarria, Professor Emerita of Education at California State University, Long Beach, and Deborah J. Short, Director of Academic Language Research and Training, LLC, will describe effective strategies aimed at providing English learners access to the core curriculum. The presenters will review current practices and explore various pedagogical models of sheltered content instruction*, focusing on the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model, sample lessons, and a review of research findings on the effectiveness of this model in increasing student outcomes. Short and Echevarria will then discuss issues around implementation of sheltered instruction program models and classroom strategies and share examples from exemplar schools. Finally, they will conclude by reflecting on the centrality of teacher professional development to sustained implementation of these strategies.

This webinar series is co-sponsored by SchoolsMovingUp and the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd in collaboration with the California Department of Education. In this webinar series, the authors of Improving Education for English Learners: Research-Based Approaches, which was published by the California Department of Education in July, present on specific chapters in the book. Webinar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues with the presenters and with each other.

*The authors use the term “sheltered content instruction” as an umbrella term for a number of models, of which “specially designed academic instruction in English” (SDAIE) is one of the most well-known.

Math Pathways & Pitfalls Early and Whole Number Concepts with Algebra Readiness

"Math Pathways & Pitfalls is a fabulous tool for teachers and students. It provides background for teachers and a framework to develop mathematical vocabulary and understanding for all students. The focus on discussion becomes part of classroom culture in other content areas as well. Questions to guide students' understanding are right there. Students get lots of opportunities to share their thinking. Powerful!" — Leanna Baker, First Grade Teacher
