Joan Bissell

Joan Bissell, Ed.D. is Director of Teacher Education and Public School Programs for the California State University (CSU). She helped to create California’s state-funded After School programs and was an early advisor to the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. She and Arron Jiron of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation planned the After-School Program Handbook for School Site Leaders. She is liaison to the Packard-funded California Teacher Pathway initiative (http://www.californiateacherpathway.com/), which prepares staff for After-School Programs and then supports them on a path toward a teaching credential. She has substantial expertise in school leadership and works closely with the 12 CSU campuses that offer Ed.D Programs in Educational Leadership (www.calstate.edu/edd) that prepare school leaders to advance effective reforms. She directs the CSU Mathematics and Science Teacher Initiative, which includes an emphasis on CSU STEM majors assisting in after-school programs.
