Description

This interactive, online presentation will help participants understand and use the Map of Standards for English Learners: Integrating Instruction and Assessment of ELD and ELA Standards in California. The Intermediate Session is designed for participants who are familiar with the Map of Standards for English Learners or who are very familiar with California's English Language Development (ELD) standards and will help those participants locate the essential ELD standards and use them for powerful teaching and assessment.

This session will introduce a starter set of essential English Language Arts (ELA) and English Language Development (ELD) standards contained in the Map of Standards for English Learners. In the Introductory Session, participants will learn how to navigate the Map of all ELA and ELD standards in California. In this session, participants will locate the essential standards in the Map and learn how to create a small set of"co-standards," standards that are complementary, cohesive, and form an integrated set of standards to teach together. This will enable participants to develop a standards-based lesson that focuses on the essentials. This presentation is designed for teachers, teacher-leaders, and administrators who are familiar with the Map (fourth or earlier versions) or very familiar with California's ELD standards (but may not have seen the Map). The use of essential standards in monitoring and reporting student progress will also be discussed.

Participants will quickly review how to navigate the Map and then delve into locating the essential standards for their grade and creating the first part of a standards-based lesson focused on the essentials.
