Standards-Based Instruction: Could it Happen in Special Education?

How can we close the achievement gaps that seem to be persistent or widening for special education students? Research-based systematic standards-focused instruction has tremendously improved outcomes for general education students, but how can this same approach facilitate closing the achievement gap between general and special education students? In this interactive presentation, learn how special educators can implement standards-focused instruction and how appropriately written Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) can support the attainment of grade-level standard skills. Silvia DeRuvo, Special Education Resources Development Specialist for Center for Prevention and Early Intervention at WestEd, will present information on how teachers can "unpack the standards" to drive instruction that will meet standards-based IEP goals.

Isolation Is the Enemy of Improvement: Instructional Leadership to Support Standards-Based Practice

This book is intended to help instructional leaders replace old norms of isolationism that have kept instructional decision-making the private domain of individual teachers. It will help instructional leaders to recognize the characteristics of effective standards-based instruction and to help their colleagues incorporate these characteristics into their own practice and the collective practice of their schools.
