Abstract (written by WestEd)

In this article, the author describes the challenges our educational system faces with over 30% of new teachers leaving the field within three years, 45% leaving within five years, and having 37% of the education workforce being over 50 and approaching retirement.

As a former first-year, non-returning teacher herself, the author describes the realities new teachers face — dissatisfaction with administrative support, workplace conditions, lack of influence within the system, classroom intrusions, inadequate preparation time, isolation, and impossible expectations.

She also discusses the need for better and more pervasive training and induction program models for new teachers.
