Abstract (written by WestEd)

Aware that parents’ involvement in their children’s education leads to increased student engagement in school, schools generally express an interest in reaching out to parents, but often, these efforts depend on the commitment of the individual teacher or school administrator. Creating a common standard for family and community involvement that is focused on improving student achievement is essential before the entire school community can make this commitment. The Commissioner’s Parents Advisory Council of the Kentucky Department of Education’s standard includes six objectives built around the following components:

  1. Relationship Building
  2. Communications
  3. Decision-making
  4. Advocacy
  5. Learning Opportunities
  6. Community Partnerships
The report also recommends that the Kentucky Department of Education take specific actions to implement the above objectives.
