Abstract (written by WestEd)

Studies show that magnet schools, like other schools of choice, can increase student motivation and parent satisfaction and involvement, as well as teacher engagement and morale. This report assists district leaders and school staff with the process of creating a magnet school. Using examples of six geographically and demographically diverse schools, each with a distinct focus, the first part of the report details the steps of this process as follows:

  1. Planning: Before the Doors Open
    1. Develop a Viable Theme and Mission
    2. Establish a Rigorous and Relevant Curriculum
    3. Attract Quality Leaders and Staff
  2. Implementing: After the Doors Open
    1. Maintain the Theme with Integrity
    2. Establish Equitable Practices for a Diverse Student Body
    3. Develop a Culture of Empowerment
    4. Provide Ongoing Professional Development
    5. Build Leadership Capacity
  3. Sustaining Success: Keeping the Doors Open
    1. Adopt a Continuous Improvement Model
    2. Build Win-Win Partnerships
    3. Develop Community Outreach
    4. Align with a District Vision
The second part provides an in-depth profile of each of the six schools.
