Abstract (written by Author/Publisher)
This publication addresses both general reading skills and those specific skills that readers of mathematics text need. Its intended audience is K-12 teachers involved in literacy and mathematics, and it is designed to be used as an instructional guide and professional development resource. It addresses reading in mathematics in terms of three interactive elements that affect comprehension: the reader, the climate, and text features. The revised second addition has been expanded to include:
- new ideas and new research on the three interactive elements of reading;
- more comprehensive sections on strategic processing and teaching;
- a discussion of assumptions about learning from a mathematics education perspective; and
- new reading strategies unique to teaching reading in mathematics
more examples at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
