Abstract (written by WestEd)
The IDEA Amendments of 1997 necessitate both that "students requiring special education services...be considered for assistive technology" and that such "devices and services must be provided at no cost to the student or family." After enumerating the common literacy problems experienced by students receiving special education services, this report details both how to assess technology needs for developing individualized education plans (IEP) and the specific technologies available for different types of problems in reading or writing. The report also contains a list of additional resources on assistive technologies.
