Abstract (written by WestEd)
This article emphasizes that a schoolwide "literacy action plan" is essential to the success of any stated focus on literacy. Using the experiences of various schools, this article provides the following lessons for a school principal leading a literacy initiative:
- Collaborate with teachers to create a schoolwide literacy vision to which the entire staff is willing to commit.
- Institute a three-year, meaningfully sequenced professional development series on literacy that aligns with other schoolwide initiatives and which allows teachers collaboration time.
- Establish follow-up procedures to ensure implementation of literacy strategies, including walk-throughs, classroom observations, team and department meetings, and personal and professional goals linked to literacy development.
- Work with the literacy team to review assessments for quality and to standardize assessments throughout the school.
- Aim for continuous improvement in student literacy.

The Data Coach's Guide to Improving Learning for All Students

"This book offers a compelling message of hope and resolve. The authors' three-year journey in a multiplicity of diverse, underperforming, high-poverty schools across the nation has resulted in a treasure chest of knowledge and experiences about how to professionally develop data coaches in ways that benefit some of our most underserved students. This book provides powerful resources to those who have the belief, passion, and desire for implementing collaborative data inquiries in schools and districts." From the Foreword by Ruth S. Johnson
