Abstract (written by WestEd)
To assist more students in staying in high school until graduation, teachers and administrators need to utilize "indicators based on readily accessible data" to identify students requiring support. The National High School Center has developed a tool that schools can utilize to create such an early warning system. The issue brief reviews the early warning indicators and discusses their importance. The issue brief explains what specific course-performance data to record and track as early warning indicators, how to calculate the on-track indicator, and how to build an early warning system and use it to target interventions and monitor student progress. In addition, the tool provides instructions on how districts can build an early warning system and how states can support the process.
