The National Dropout Prevention Center/Network has identified career and technical education as one of its 15 effective dropout prevention strategies. This issue brief explains the benefits of career and technical education. The relevance of the curriculum to life goals increases student engagement, and the flexible options for delivery of curriculum address barriers students might face, such as lack of transportation or health problems. Equally important, the small learning communities that are an integral part of career and technical education enable students to effectively build mentoring relationships and other positive relationships with adults.
