Abstract (written by WestEd)

This paper describes Early Head Start's (EHS) Enhanced Home Visiting Program (EHVP) pilot project, begun in 2003 to involve EHS staff members with the extended family or friends providing care for children enrolled in EHS. Specifically, given that the family and friends network (FFN) of child care providers is likely affected by the stressors associated with poverty, the EHVP pilot project aimed to address these concerns as well as utilize the strengths of this network. The paper discusses issues that arose during program implementation. It reports an improvement in quality of FFN interaction with children, a reduction in caregivers' isolation, and the development of new community partnerships. Also, EHS staff in the program increased their understanding and effectiveness in working with extended families.
