Abstract (written by WestEd)
This paper proffers Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) as an evidence-based approach to reduce the instances of serious misbehavior in the preschool setting. PBS is based on an "understanding of the purpose of the behavior and a focus on teaching new skills to replace challenging behavior." Adults can teach social competence through utilizing a teaching pyramid composed of the following four levels:
- Positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues
- Classroom preventive practices
- Social and emotional teaching strategies
- Intensive individualized interventions (for a small percentage of children)
