Abstract (written by WestEd)
To define the challenge of achieving reading proficiency for all, Daggett uses the Lexile Framework for Reading to obtain grade equivalent measures of reading and then compares those with Lexile levels for educational textbooks and materials. His findings confirm what teachers already know students in a classroom have different levels of reading proficiency, yet all must read the same materials whether too easy or hard. Yet, reading loads and demands change dramatically after grade 4, precisely when reading instruction typically diminishes or disappears. In addition to a mismatch between reading proficiency and instructional materials, an even more disconcerting disconnect can be found between student levels and on-the-job reading requirements, even for an entry-level position. Taking lessons from schools that have closed the gap, Daggett closes with recommendations for schools to improve the reading proficiency of its students.
