Abstract (written by WestEd)

This chart rates six commonly used reading screening tools on the following criteria:

  • Classification accuracy: The extent to which it accurately determines whether or not students are at risk for reading disability.

  • Generalizability: The extent to which results generated from one population can be applied to another population

  • Reliability: The level of consistency with which the tool classifies students from one administration to the next

  • Validity: The extent to which a tool accurately measures the underlying construct that it is intended to measure

  • Disaggregated reliability, validity, and classification data for diverse populations: How many of the three types of data (classification, reliability, and validity) are disaggregated and meet the criteria for convincing or partially convincing

The tool also lists information on the administration format, administration and scoring time, the type of scoring key (manual or computer), and whether a tool provides norms or benchmarks.
