Abstract (written by WestEd)
This Chicago Public Schools publication takes a look at how walkthroughs, a strategy for school administrators to quickly visit classrooms and provide instructional feedback to teachers, have worked in New York's District 2. The article stresses that although principals can easily implement walkthroughs, they require a major culture change in the school to one of improving teaching, not just supervision and evaluation. The article stresses the importance of collaboration between the district administrators and educators, and the fact that the practices evolved over time. It also discusses some of the problems encountered when San Diego implemented the walkthrough strategy.

For accomplished readers, the task of drawing meaning from text may seem transparent. But for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, the question of how best to help children develop this ability has been the subject of long-standing controversy. The teaching and learning of reading -- a fundamental concern to those of us interested in healthy human development and education -- is the focus of this issue of R&D Alert.
