Abstract (written by WestEd)

National PTA offers six standards for parent involvement, along with quality indicators that aptly delineate school and district action. Sample applications are included as well. Besides standards for parent involvement, this Web site offers a variety of research, information, and resources for both parents and teachers. The six standards, taken directly from the NPTA site, are as follows:

  • Communicating: Communication between home and school is regular,
    two-way, and meaningful.
  • Parenting: Parenting skills are promoted and supported.
  • Student Learning: Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning.
  • Volunteering: Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought.
  • School Decision Making and Advocacy: Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.
  • Collaborating with Community: Community resources are used to strengthen schools, families, and student learning.

Bo De Long-Cotty, Senior Program Associate at WestEd RTEC, says, "Not only does this web site present the little-known Standards for Parent Involvement, it also offers research, information, links, additional resources and practical strategies for parents and teachers to collaborate for school change and improving student learning. A real gem for both parents and teachers."
