Abstract (written by WestEd)

Schmoker presents three elements of schools that continually improve: teamwork, measurable long-range and short-term goals, and frequent analysis and use of performance data. The breakthrough strategy of rapid results can lead to dramatic change in the first year by selecting and working on one specific, yet meaningful, goal that can be achieved in one year or less. Early success fuels enthusiasm and a commitment to continue striving toward long-range goals. According to the author, "Teachers perform more effectively when they collaborate. Evidence shows that schools can and will improve if they gear up to strive for increasingly better results by examining and refining the processes that most directly contribute to designated results."
