Abstract (written by WestEd)
After challenging four popular assessment beliefs and providing constructive replacements, the author advocates that we must balance the use of annual standardized tests of learning with day-to-day classroom assessments for learning. He cites research that shows remarkable gains in student achievement in classrooms using effective classroom assessment (assessment for learning) and research that demonstrates that assessment for learning rivals one-on-one tutoring in effectiveness. Noting that we have already instituted standardized assessment of learning, he exhorts school leaders and teachers to use powerful ongoing classroom assessment for learning in order to improve student achievement.
