About

This project, "Developing Facilitators of Practice-Based Mathematics Professional Development" is the second phase of the NSF-funded grant, "Video Cases for Mathematics Professional Development" (VCMPD). The name "Video Cases II" (VCII) is used as the name of the new project, linking the two phases. This three-year effort is designed to accomplish four goals:

  • Prepare facilitators to use NSF-funded Video Cases for Mathematics     Professional Development materials.

  • Document and describe how VCMPD materials can support leadership.

  • Develop facilitation materials customized to address the needs of     teacher preservice.

  • Examine what teachers learn and apply from   their experiences with     these materials.

    Staff Involved in this Project:

Judith Mumme, Principal Investigator, Leadership Curriculum for Mathematics Professional Development; Co-Principal Investigator, Video Cases for Math Professional Development

Judith Mumme directs components of several mathematics projects at WestEd. She is PI of Leadership Curriculum for Mathematics Professional Development. This NSF-funded project is creating video-based curriculum materials to support the development of leaders of mathematics professional development. She is also PI of Developing Facilitators of Practice-Based Professional Development, a project that is designed to prepare leaders to facilitate practice-based professional development. This project is also gathering research data on teacher learning (specifically from Videocases for Mathematics Professional Development materials).

Ms. Mumme is a senior staff member on Turning to the Evidence, a research project studying teacher learning from professional development based on the use of artifacts of practice. Previously, she served as co-PI/Director of the Mathematics Renaissance K-12 and the California Alliance for Mathematics and Science (CAMS), the California State Systemic Initiative. She was director of the Santa Barbara site of the California Mathematics Project (1984-92), director of Project T.I.M.E. an NSF-funded professional development project (1986-89), member of the California Mathematics Framework Committee (1988-90), member of the writing committee of the NCTM Standards (1987-88), and a high school and junior high school mathematics teacher (1970-1984).

Nanette Seago, Project Director, Professional Development in Mathematics Through Videocases

Nanette Seago currently serves as Co-PI for two NSF projects, a ROLE project: Turning to the Evidence: What Teachers Learn by Using Classroom Records and Artifacts in Mathematics Instruction and a teacher enhancement project: Developing Facilitators of Practice-Based Professional Development. From July 1998 — December 2003, Nanette Seago has served as the Project Director and Co-PI for the Video Cases for Mathematics Professional Development Project (VCMPD), funded by the National Science to develop professional development curriculum materials. She was primary author for Learning and Teaching Linear Functions published in March 2004. In 2002, Seago collaborated with LessonLab in the development of the TIMSS-R public release videos and the design of an online course sponsored by Intel Corporation entitled: TIMSS Video Studies: Explorations of Algebra Teaching. In 1997-1998 she authored the TIMSS Video Moderator's Guide for the US Department of Education.
