Since we have such a full schedule of informative and interactive events, we have dedicated our entire Fall Update to letting you know about these exciting presentations. Mentoring New Teachers Through Collaborative Coaching
September 19 - Free Online Event
Kathy Dunne, Director of Professional Development with Learning Innovations at WestEd and co-author of Mentoring New Teachers Through Collaborative Coaching: Linking Teacher and Student Learning, will facilitate an interactive webinar
that will clarify roles and responsibilities of mentors as collaborative coaches, learn about the impact of coaching on new teacher learning, and examine how the needs of new teachers impact mentors as collaborative coaches. Participants will also learn about several tools to assess mentor programs and coaching performance. Following the session, participants will be able to download several free tools and resources.
BuildingChoice: Improving Public School Choice Programs

Are you interested in expanding choice options in your district? Are you trying to find more effective ways to communicate with hard-to-reach parents in your district? Are you seeking ideas to improve program evaluation?
This interactive presentation will provide an overview of a free, online toolkit, Building Choice.org, which features practices from programs across the country that are addressing these issues in a variety of ways. During this presentation, Pansy Houghton, Supervisor of Choice for Hillsborough County Public Schools (Florida),and Willie Poinsette, Chief Officer Student, Family and School Support for Portland Public Schools (Oregon), will share
their promising practices and materials that are featured on the site. Kristin Mitchell, Vice President of Edvance Research, will moderate this event.
Reading Science for Understanding in Middle and High School
October 3 - Free Online Event
In this interactive event, Cynthia Greenleaf, Co-Director of WestEd’s Strategic Literacy Initiative (SLI), will engage participants in an examination of the possibilities and impact of integrating literacy instruction with science instruction at the middle and high school levels using the Reading Apprenticeship® instructional framework. This research-based instructional framework is designed to improve the teaching effectiveness of content-area middle and high school teachers, literacy coaches, and teacher educators.
Tools for Literacy: Technology to Support Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary
Development
October24 - Free Online Event
Technology provides a new opportunity to remove barriers to learning and improve the literacy skills of all students. Through discussion and demonstration, Kathleen H. McClaskey, President of EdTech Associates, and Joan Sedita, founding partner of Keys To Literacy, will introduce participants to accessible desktop and “no cost” online tools that can be used to support the teaching and learning of reading comprehension and vocabulary strategies.
Suggestions will be provided for how these technology tools can be used to develop topic webs and graphic organizers; identify, highlight, and pull out main ideas and details into notes; generate summaries; and support word-study
skills such as focusing on word parts and creating semantic webs. This event will emphasize the importance of direct comprehension and vocabulary instruction, as well as how to integrate the technology tools into this instruction.
