Response to Intervention
Response to Intervention is a promising practice, but many are asking, “How do we get there?” Although the “RTI Triangle” is now a familiar concept, many schools and districts are still looking for the practical process steps necessary to implement successful models. For the month of May, SchoolsMovingUp will highlight the models, resources and “lessons learned” from states and schools that have been at the forefront in implementation through a series of webinars. These webinars will highlight specific implementation practices and will provide essential resources to schools and districts as they move forward with their scale-up efforts. In addition to this series, we are hosting a number of other events in the coming months, so please check our

Snapshots of RTI Implementation

May 7, 2008 - Free Online Event
This webinar will summarize work by the Center on Instruction on school- and state-level implementation of RTI. Greg Roberts, Director of the Center on Instruction, Special Education Strand (COI-SPED), will provide a brief overview of the Center on Instruction’s RTI-related projects. Saro Mohammed, Research Associate at COI-SPED, will describe the information gathered to date from a collaborative project with teams from regional Comprehensive Centers and state educational agencies regarding the implementation of RTI at the state level. Preliminary findings document some of the technical assistance strategies being employed by state departments of education and regional Comprehensive Centers.
Kathryn Tackett, Research Associate at COI-SPED, will discuss how RTI is being implemented in different content areas at five elementary and middle schools around the country. She will describe how these five schools began implementing RTI, how interventions are provided, the role RTI plays in special education eligibility decisions, and the perceived challenges and benefits of implementing RTI.
RTI Process Steps: An Elementary School Approach to Implementation
May 13, 2008 - Free Online Event
This interactive presentation will focus on five essential components for effective Response to Intervention (RTI) implementation. Silvia DeRuvo, Senior Program Associate with the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd, will provide a brief overview of these essential RTI components and the practical school implementation steps necessary for schools to effectively implement a successful RTI model. Brad Barcus, Principal of Sierra Elementary School, a 2007-2008 Title I Academic Achievement Award recipient, will provide the practical application of these steps as he describes the process that his small rural elementary school took in implementing an effective multi-tiered intervention model.
Barcus will focus on the data that has helped drive the research-based instruction that has helped his school to achieve a score of 852 on the Academic Performance Index (API). He will also share how his school effectively utilizes its resources to provide interventions for all students found to be “at risk.” Practitioners working with or in elementary schools will benefit from Sierra Elementary School’s “lessons learned” about the RTI process.
RTI in a Secondary School Setting: Riverbank High School Story
May 28, 2008 - Free Online Event
Since school-wide implementation of the Content Literacy Continuum (CLC), a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework designed to address school-wide literacy needs of secondary school students, Riverbank High School has grown over 100 points on California’s Academic Performance Index (API) and exceeded growth targets for Latino students, students with disabilities, and English learners. In this session, a high school administrator, a central office administrator, and a project lead/instructional coach will share their experiences from four years of implementing the CLC in a high poverty, high minority, suburban/semi-rural high school identified for improvement. This session will provide an overview of the CLC, which is based upon a set of Content Enhancement Routines and Learning Strategies developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.

Response to Intervention (RTI) and the Connections to Neurodevelopment
February 7, 2007 - Online Event
In this interactive presentation, Leigh Burgess, Implementation Manager for All Kinds of Minds, showcased the connections between RTI and neurodevelopment by highlighting multiple programs and their potential impact on student learning. Each program was viewed through a neurodevelopmental lens, including Schools Attuned, Differentiated Instruction, Understanding by Design, and Critical Friends Groups. This Online Event also highlighted how RTI is being used in several states and how each of the highlighted programs complement a neurodevelopmental understanding of learning variation among struggling learners.
