Courageous Conversations and Culturally Relevant Teaching
November 16 - Free Online Event This interactive presentation is drawn from a powerful and personally transforming workshop designed to help administrators, teachers, and parents consider the implications of racism, exclusion, and prejudice on student learning. Participants will engage in a thoughtful exploration of racism and how it manifests today in our culture and in our schools. A critical outcome is an awareness of the degree to which racism and other diversity issues are part of educational failure. Jamie Almanzán, Director of Learning and Teaching at Pacific Educational Group, will discuss strategies for identifying and addressing policies and practices that negatively impact students’ ability to meet rigorous academic standards. Free registration required.
NCLB/IDEA: Joining Forces to Improve Achievement for Each and Every Student December 14 - Free Online Event
There is growing concern that many schools targeted for improvement under NCLB are failing to meet Adequate Yearly Progress due to the “subgroup” of students with disabilities. This interactive presentation will draw from the Northeast Regional Resource Center’s September NCLB/IDEA Invitational State Leadership Forum, which engaged state leaders and others in general and special education around this topic. This online event with WestEd/NERRC staff Kristin Reedy and Vicki Hornus, like the Forum, will explore how state and local leaders can leverage both NCLB and IDEA to make a difference in the outcomes for all children — especially those most at risk of being left behind in our society. Free registration required.

Nominate a school or district to be profiled on SchoolsMovingUp!
SchoolsMovingUp invites you to nominate a school or district to be profiled as a "School/District on the Move." See our current profiles for examples.
Through this process, institutions nationwide can share their "best-practice" strategies, providing unique professional learning opportunities for similar schools and districts across the country and right next-door. Our profiles include student demographic data and AYP history with subgroup information. We conduct an interview with a key leader at the school or district to inform the accompanying narrative, which details the strategies and initiatives that have contributed to improved student achievement and being "on the move."
Please consider sharing your success stories and strategies with others. We are particularly interested in schools with large numbers of students from low-income families or racial or ethnic groups that meet significant subgroup size for AYP determination.
It's easy to nominate! Simply contact us with the school or district name, its location, and a contact person's email address and phone number. We will get in touch with that person immediately to schedule a brief interview.
