NCLB/IDEA: Joining Forces to Improve Achievement for Each and Every Student
December 14 - Free Online Event There is growing concern that many schools targeted for improvement under NCLB are failing to meet Adequate Yearly Progress due to the "subgroup" of students with disabilities. This interactive presentation will draw from the Northeast Regional Resource Center’s September NCLB/IDEA Invitational State Leadership Forum, which engaged state leaders and others in general and special education around this topic. This online event with WestEd/NERRC staff Kristin Reedy and Vicki Hornus, like the Forum, will explore how state and local leaders can leverage both NCLB and IDEA to make a difference in the outcomes for all children — especially those most at risk of being left behind in our society. Free registration required.
Data Mentoring: Building Capacity for Data-Driven Decision Making January 25 - Free Online Event
All schools have data, but most don’t know how to effectively use it to make decisions. In this session, you will learn how Beaumont USD (CA) and WestEd partnered to build the capacity of teachers to read, analyze, and interpret assessment data and use it to inform their planning. Free registration required.

High expectations plus high support equals student success
American Indian Public Charter School (AIPCS) is a small middle school sponsored by the Oakland (CA) Unified School District. AIPCS has been a "school on the move" for the last five years. California API (Academic Performance Index) scores have consistently, and rapidly, risen from 436 in 2001 to 880 in 2005. The faculty at AIPCS attribute these significant gains to a culture and climate that rewards academic performance above all else.
Dr. Ben Chavis, principal for the past five years, is an instructional leader who takes a no-frills approach. He sees himself first and foremost as a coach, and makes sure that all "players" know not only what they need to be successful, but also what they don’t need. Read the profile of this school's approach and look at their demographic and AYP data by clicking on the title above.
