How can we close the achievement gaps that seem to be persistent or widening for special education students? Research-based, systematic standards-focused instruction has tremendously improved outcomes for general education students, but how can this same approach facilitate closing the achievement gap for special education students? Due to the popularity of this event in April of 2006 and the interest in this topic, Silvia DeRuvo, Special Education Resources Development Specialist for the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd, will present this session again with added information about a standards-based IEP Web module.

In this interactive presentation, learn how special educators can support and implement standards-focused instruction founded on appropriately written standards-based Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs). Attendees will have an opportunity to hear about the upcoming California Department of Education newly revised Standards-Based IEP Web Module that will provide educators and parents information and practical applications for standards-aligned IEP goals that support grade-level standard skills attainment for students with disabilities. DeRuvo will also present information on how teachers can make standards-aligned instruction that is linked to standards-based IEP goals a common practice that will ultimately close the achievement gap and provide educational equity for students with disabilities.
