The Staff Quality Improvement System (SQIS) in Wichita, Kansas, identifies three major components: a Continuous Growth Plan for all employees, an Orientation Phase for new teachers, and a Plan of Assistance for employees who need additional support beyond the Continuous Growth Plan.
The system is a self-review process in which individuals are responsible for their own improvement. For example, as a new teacher, Sheryl was required to keep a personal journal of questions, concerns, successes, and feelings to which she could refer in communicating with her mentor. In the SQIS form, she needed to identify her goals, successes, indicators, strategies, resources, and timeline. After she carefully reviewed the rubric on the back of the form, which included the criteria and performance levels, she was confident that she would be able to attain an acceptable level in each of the seven areas. Sheryl then met with her mentor and completed the form, basing her growth plan on required staff development.
Throughout the year, she met with her mentor several times. She was glad that she was keeping a journal and sharing her thoughts with her mentor. She appreciated the advice and guidance of her mentor and changed her strategies when necessary. She collected a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate her efforts in progress toward her growth goals. Sheryl met all target dates and was not surprised when her team members agreed that she had met her goals.
